Gravity-induced phase phenomena in plate-rod colloidal mixtures

چکیده

Gravity can affect colloidal suspensions since for micrometer-sized particles gravitational and thermal energies be comparable over vertical length scales of a few millimeters. In mixtures, each species possesses different buoyant mass, which make experimental results counter-intuitive difficult to interpret. Here, we revisit from theoretical perspective iconic sedimentation-diffusion-equilibrium experiments on plate-rod mixtures by van der Kooij Lekkerkerker. We reproduce their findings, including the observation five mesophases in single cuvette. Using sedimentation path theory, incorporate gravity into microscopic theory bulk mixture. also show how disentangle effects obtain behavior predictions that experimentally tested. These include changes sequence altering sample height. demonstrate both mass ratio height form control parameters study phase behavior.

Three-Phase Coexistence in Colloidal Rod-Plate Mixtures.

Aqueous suspensions of clay particles, such as montmorillonite (MMT) platelets and sepiolite (Sep) rods, tend to form gels at concentrations around 1 vol %. For Sep rods, adsorbing sodium polyacrylate to the surface allows for an isotropic-nematic phase separation to be seen instead. Here, MMT is added to such Sep suspensions, resulting in a complex phase behavior. Across a range of clay concen...

Liquid-crystalline phase behavior of a colloidal rod-plate mixture.

The phase behavior of rod-plate mixtures was investigated using model systems containing unambiguously rod- and plate-shaped colloids. We find that the theoretically disputed biaxial nematic phase is unstable with respect to demixing into an isotropic and two uniaxial nematic phases. The phase behavior at very high densities is exceptionally rich and includes the coexistence of up to four diffe...

Calcium-induced phase separation phenomena in multicomponent unsaturated lipid mixtures.

The ability of calcium to induce phase separation in multicomponent lipid mixtures containing various unsaturated species of acidic and neutral phospholipids has been investigated by 31P NMR, 3H NMR, and small-angle X-ray diffraction techniques. It is shown that, in unsaturated (dioleoyl-) phosphatidylglycerol (PG)/phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (1:1) and phosphatidic acid (PA)/phosphatidylcholi...

Gravity-induced liquid crystal phase transitions of colloidal platelets.

The influence of gravity on a suspension of sterically stabilized colloidal gibbsite platelets is studied. An initially isotropic-nematic biphasic sample of such a suspension develops a columnar phase on the bottom on prolonged standing. This phenomenon is described using a simple osmotic compression model. We performed Monte Carlo simulations of cut spheres with aspect ratio L/D=1/15 and took ...

Density functional theory for colloidal rod-sphere mixtures.

We present a density functional theory for a model colloidal mixture of hard spheres and infinitely thin hard rods. For these freely rotating particles, we use a fundamental measures approach to obtain a functional that features the correct dimensional crossover and the exact low density limit. For isotropic bulk fluid mixtures, the free energy, and hence the demixing phase diagram, are identic...
